Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain?
You can break the cycle

If you’re reading this, you’re probably desperately seeking a solution for chronic pain. You’ve likely sought help from several healthcare professionals, tried medications, pursued yoga or chiropractic or maybe even seen a mental health professional in case “it’s all in your head.”

You may be wondering: Will I have to live with chronic pain for the rest of my life?

The answer is NO.

With the help of body biofeedback (BioRegulation Therapy/BRT) you can retrain your nervous system to reduce pain

You’ve heard it before.  Some great new machine or procedure will solve your problem or reduce your pain.   Then…it doesn’t live up to its promises.

At the Center for Brain Training you’ll never be offered a treatment that we haven’t thoroughly investigated and tested, no matter how good it sounds in theory.

How we came to offer body biofeedback in our practice

In 2013 we learned about body biofeedback being used in Europe with great success. We were cautiously optimistic about its potential for our practice. However, we’d built a solid reputation in our field for providing dependable, effective non-drug therapies to help clients with chronic pain (and other disorders such as anxiety and insomnia) who hadn’t responded to conventional treatments. We weren’t going to jump into anything. Before we’d consider incorporating it into our toolbox, body biofeedback had to meet some very stringent criteria (which few of the dozens of technologies we had evaluated over the years had met): (1) Does it work consistently, beyond a doubt, with complicated, chronic, treatment-resistant cases? and (2) Do results sustain over time?

Putting it to the test

To find out, we put it to the test for six weeks with some very difficult chronic cases, including this one:

A 37-year-old woman had suffered for ten years with daily headaches and chronic back and neck pain. Just getting out of bed triggered severe pain throughout her body. She was unable to lift anything, turn her neck or lift her constantly stiff and painful shoulders. After undergoing one session, she reported that for five subsequent days she’d been able to get out of bed easily, had had no headaches and had experienced a 70 percent improvement in her pain. (Note: Despite expecting at least a little improvement, the extent of her response surprised us.)

She needed more sessions than one to produce sustained progress, but the amount of change following her first session was remarkable and provided an indication of what was possible. Over time saw other equally impressive results (although it usually took more than one session.)

Impressed by the results we saw during our six-week trial, we committed to invest in the technology.

After Decades of Disability from a Train Wreck, Woman Finally Living a Normal Life
On almost any given day you can watch Sandra Waldron joyfully sweeping her grandkids into her arms, bargain-hunting with her daughter at the mall, checking out specials in the grocery store or preparing elaborate meals and baked goods for her friends and family. In fact, to see her today you’d never suspect that for most of her adult life she endured physical agony so extreme that she couldn’t do any of those ordinary activities. For decades her life revolved around making it through the day running a medical billing business with the help of strong prescription pain killers and muscle relaxers. That discouraging lifestyle all changed when a doctor she worked for suggested she seek help from the Center for Brain Training. “It’s been amazing,” said Sandra, 66. “Without the Center for Brain Training I would have lost everything.”

“It’s surprising that more mainstream physicians don’t know about neurofeedback. I tell people every day that there’s more they can do for their pain than surgery and pain medications. Going to the Center for Brain Training saved my life. I’ll be forever grateful that I found them.”

“I have suffered from lower back pain for over 30 years. Despite physical therapy, anti-inflammatories and even steroids, I experienced little to no relief – and no relief that was permanent.  I had just made an appointment to have a rhizotomy to sever the roots of the nerves in my lower back when I tried body biofeedback at the Center for Brain Training. A few weeks after undergoing five sessions, I realized to my astonishment that I had almost no pain when I got out of a chair or after sitting in the car and was able to stand for long periods without any pain whatsoever. I’ve had five months now with no back pain and am frankly amazed. Nothing I’ve tried has ever given me this kind of lasting relief – and I avoided a medical procedure, too.”

No more medication for back pain

A client had been plagued by chronic back pain since the age of 16. She tried many solutions, eventually seeking help from a pain doctor and becoming addicted to pain medication. She was confined to her bed and couch three to four days a week and struggled to get anything done. After four body biofeedback treatments over the course of a month, she reported an 80% reduction in pain and a significant reduction in pain medications. After two more sessions she discontinued her pain medications and resumed normal life, including working in her yard. One year later she was still pain- and pain medication-free.

What 50 specialists couldn’t fix but body biofeedback did: 40 years of headaches and chronic body pain

A woman had 40 years of chronic headaches, neck and back pain she attributed to a car accident at age 19. She had seen more than 50 healthcare specialists, including neurologists, chiropractors and acupuncturists, without any relief. After four sessions she reported significantly reduced pain. After a month she had had no headaches and reported a 75% reduction of her pain.

Lasting treatment for hip pain

“Roger” had hip replacement surgery 7 years ago, underwent a second hip replacement, and was also later diagnosed with cancer. Before coming to the Center for Brain Training, Roger had been coping with chronic pain and had tried many different therapies, none of which worked.

Roger began a series of body biofeedback sessions, paired with neurofeedback training. After his first treatment, he immediately felt less pain and discomfort. Three days after treatment, Roger reported having had no pain for two days. After the next session, he reported five days with no pain.

No more back pain

“Ed” a client in his 60’s, experienced chronic back problems for many years. The only treatment that worked to reduce the pain was periodic cortisone shots and rhizotomy (a procedure that destroys the nerves that contribute to pain). Ed came to the Center for Brain Training because he wanted more effective, less invasive treatment.

After his first two body biofeedback sessions Ed noticed less pain, more flexibility and increased levels of comfort. After additional body biofeedback sessions, combined with neurofeedback, he began playing golf again and no longer needed invasive treatments.

Goodbye to pain, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia

“Debbie” suffered for years with chronic pain, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. After her first body biofeedback session, combined with neurofeedback, she noticed less agitation, more energy and a feeling of tranquility. She is now able to enjoy long walks and feels a deep sense of happiness that she did not experience prior to treatment.

Refining body biofeedback’s use in our practice

Over the years we’ve refined how we combine body biofeedback with our neurofeedback tools and have seen our clients improve to an extent that astounded us. Frankly, after more than a decade of searching for a new technology to complement or enhance the benefits of our neurofeedback technology, body biofeedback revolutionized how the Center for Brain Training treats chronic pain.

We can’t say how long it will take for any given individual to see results, or even guarantee that you’ll get results at all, but since adding body biofeedback into our practice, at least 75 percent of our clients have reported consistent improvement, and even more improvement when combined with neurofeedback.

What is body biofeedback?

Body biofeedback:
Is non-invasive
Has no undesirable side effects
Has shown impressive clinical results in the United States and Europe
Offers long-lasting relief with regular use

Balances the body

Body biofeedback has its roots in acupuncture but with the added advantage of modern-day technology. It’s a body balancing method whereby a computerized machine reads the electrical impulses (frequencies) being emitted by the cells in your body. It filters out the disharmonic “unhealthy” vibrations that interfere with optimal cell communication and functioning, amplifies the “healthy” harmonic frequencies, and sends them back to the cells. These harmonic frequencies “invigorate” the cells and encourage them to function the way they are supposed to.

Calms the nervous system

Once the cells are doing their jobs better, the nervous system calms down and pain signals, which have become magnified over time, diminish.

Combines powerfully with neurofeedback

When combined with neurofeedback, body biofeedback provides even more impressive results for helping alleviate pain and other problems many of our clients have struggled with for years.

All you have to do is recline on a comfortable chair or table in one of our pleasantly decorated treatment rooms and relax. Our computer does the rest. You feel nothing during your session.

Why you might not have heard of body biofeedback from your doctor

Because body biofeedback is a non-drug treatment for pain, many doctors and other health professionals are unaware of the technology and its effectiveness. In the United States, our health culture is centered on drugs. Therefore, other approaches, even though they are effective, are often overlooked because they lack large promotional budgets such as those of pharmaceutical companies.

Many of our clients have gotten significant relief from our pain protocol.
