Within ADD there are subtypes including inattention, hyperactive, and impulsive. Impulsivity and hyperactivity often go together. It is very important to note that people with ADD can pay attention to whatever they find stimulating naturally. It is when they are not naturally stimulated and have to rely on their own ability to sustain attention that they have trouble.

INATTENTIVE people often go undetected by teachers and parents. These people aren’t disruptive. They just look like they are lazy, but they are not. Their symptoms include:

Underachiever
Easily Distracted
Often loses things
Forgetful
Procrastinates – especially with tasks that require sustained attention
Seems not to listen when spoken to
Doesn’t finish things - loses interest
Unmotivated
Daydreams
Disorganized
Low energy – sluggish
Can be hyperfocused to the exclusion of everything else

HYPERACTIVE

Can’t sit still (adults may experience restlessness)
Fidgets
Excessive Talking
Excited to do many things but then doesn’t finish
Impatient
Trouble doing quiet things
Feels driven, constantly on the go
Makes careless mistakes
Is accused of not caring about and/or not listening to others
Can be hyperfocused to the exclusion of everything else
IMPULSIVITY
Doesn’t see consequences for their actions
Often interrupts others
Has trouble awaiting their turn
Blurts out the answers
Easily frustrated
